Why Maintenance Matters
- Regular upkeep ensures consistent flavor, safe operation, and long equipment life.
- Neglect leads to leaks, off-flavors, or dangerous pressure buildup.
Daily Maintenance
- Moka Pot:
- Rinse all parts with hot water after each use.
- Avoid dish soap, as it can leave residues in aluminum pots.
- Dry thoroughly to prevent corrosion or mold.
- Ibrik:
- Rinse and wipe clean immediately.
- Avoid abrasive scrubbing that scratches the copper/brass lining.
Gasket Care (Moka Pot)
- The gasket (rubber or silicone ring) seals the top and bottom chambers.
- Over time, it hardens, cracks, or absorbs coffee oils.
- Signs of wear:
- Steam leaks from the joint.
- Coffee spurts or fails to extract properly.
- Strong off-flavors despite cleaning.
Replacing Gaskets
- Remove old gasket with a blunt tool.
- Clean gasket groove of oils or residues.
- Insert new gasket evenly, pressing gently into place.
- Replace filter plate if worn or warped.
- Replacement frequency: every 6–12 months depending on use.
Other Maintenance Points
- Safety Valve: Check regularly for blockage; clean with toothpick if necessary.
- Threads & Seals: Ensure smooth screwing; clean metal threads to prevent leaks.
- Storage: Keep disassembled or with lid open to avoid trapped moisture.
Summary
Proper maintenance and gasket replacement keep Moka pots and ibriks safe, clean, and reliable. Regular rinsing, avoiding harsh detergents, and swapping gaskets every few months ensure both flavor integrity and brewing safety.
